Join us for our August First Weekend Event, and celebrate 220th Birthday of the Coast Guard! On August 4, 1790 the Revenue Cutter Service, the precursor to the United States Coast Guard, was established. Listen to maritime folk music, tour a U.S.C.G. Cutter, and enjoy other activities celebrating the Coast Guard’s rich history and Portsmouth’s designation as a Coast Guard City! As with all our First Saturday programs, admission will be FREE to both the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum and Lightship Portsmouth!

Sponsored by the Friends of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, join us for a presentation by local historian and author Al Chewning as he talks about the threat of German Unterseeboote, or U-boats, along the east coast during World War II. Author of The Approaching Storm: German U-boats off the Virginia Coast in WWII, Mr. Chewning will discuss the German Navy’s operations in the area during “Operation Drumbeat” and how the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy deterred disaster from Virginia’s waters.

Join us for our September First Weekend Event. This Labor Day weekend, explore what life and conditions were like for workers, both locally and nationally, at the dawn of the 20th Century. Find out what kind of jobs people worked, the tools they used, and what a typical day was like for workers of all ages. Learn the history of Labor Day, the holiday we celebrate every first Monday in September. As with all our First Saturday programs, admission will be FREE to both the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum and Lightship Portsmouth!

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum presents “The Age of Sail” on Saturday, October 16th, 2010 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. Learn about the history of ships and the impact they played on our local history. This event takes place during the heart of Schooner Days, a three-day celebration offering numerous maritime related activities along High Street Landing, just in front of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum. During Schooner Days, Portsmouth’s waterfront will be lined with over 50 schooners from around the world. Join us for our November First Weekend Event. Discover what life along the river was like for the first citizens of Portsmouth, the Chesapeake Indians. At the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, see real artifacts and learn about the daily use of tools of the Chesapeakes as you try your hand using their tools. In the museum’s Discovery Cove, make your own pinch pots and turtle shell cups. At the Lightship Portsmouth learn the skill of boat building and make your own model canoe. Throughout the day learn and play Native American games! As with all our First Saturday programs, admission will be FREE to both the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum and Lightship Portsmouth!
