FIRST WEEKEND SATURDAYS!
Enjoy hands-on activities and educational experiences in maritime history every first Saturday of each month, February through October, at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum and the Lightship Portsmouth! Program and museum admission are free and open to the public in coordination with the Olde Towne Business Association's First Weekend Series at the Courthouse Galleries, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum and the Lightship Portsmouth.

Visit with costumed lightship sailors, enjoy storytelling and discover what life was like aboard these “little red ships.” Also, come and meet David Narvaez, author of the Lightship Portsmouth Coloring Book as he signs copies of the book. Description: What was it like to live among the Virginia
Indians in1607? Would you go to school
or just play games? What would you
wear? Join us for an exciting exploration
of life in the Chesapeake region in 1607.
Hands-on and participatory
   
   
   
Program: Choose a Camp! Come for one day or all four.
Explore the life of a pirate on the Chesapeake Bay, join the Revolutionary War forces and defend your homes against invasion, attend a militia camp training, and learn what it was like to be a midshipman in the Confederate Naval Academy in 1863. Hands-on and participatory.

Revenge? Draw your rations of hard bread
and prepare yourself for learning cannon

Attention all Virginians! Now is the time
Join forces and defend your homes
Against invasion! But which side do we
join, the British or the American? How
can we tell the difference between the
two armies? What is it like in the army
in 1775? Join us for a revolutionary
expedition as we explore the ins and
outs of Lord Dunmore’s war.

The British are about to attack Craney
Island? Where is Craney Island and why
are the British trying to capture Hampton
Roads? Join us for an exploration of the
Battle of Fort Norfolk and the effect of the
War of 1812 on the people of the
Chesapeake Bay
   
  All Recruits: The Naval Academy Wants You! School of the Sailor 1863

What was it like to be a midshipman in
the Confederate Naval Academy in 1863?
What would you wear? What classes
would you take? Join us for an exciting
exploration of life in the Naval Academy
during the Civil War.
   
When: Wednesday, July 23, 30, August 6, and 13
